The Centre helps victims of sexual violence in Cork city and county. It also visits schools and colleges to educate young people about sexual and domestic violence with its Project Name It programme.

Mary Crilly set up the Centre on International Women’s Day in 1983. In 2022 Mary was awarded the Freedom of the City of Cork, which is the highest honour the city can give any person. This recognised her inspiring work over forty years. In her speech accepting the honour Mary said:

“Today is not just about looking back and seeing what has been achieved in our city and in our country and what has not been achieved. It is also about looking forward. It is about moving forward to fight the fight and make a difference. And together, we can make a difference.”
